The Council Bluffs Community School District is working with four area banks (American National Bank, First National Bank, TS Bank, and U.S. Bank) to provide the Great Piggy Bank Pageant at six elementary schools in which an in-school banking program exists.
The six elementary schools (Carter Lake Elementary, Edison Elementary, Franklin Elementary, Rue Elementary, Bloomer Elementary, and Hoover Elementary) will have savings lessons, facilitated by representatives of the four participating banks, provided to 3rd and/or 4th grade students. Those students will then receive cardboard piggy banks and will be asked to decorate them any way they choose. Teachers will judge the decorated piggy banks and award classroom winners in each school. The winners will receive $5 and each student that participated in the event will take their piggy banks home to use. The students will also be asked to complete individual savings pledges as a part of their lesson.
Additionally, participating banks will offer incentives to all students who make deposits during the week. Matching deposits, up to $5, will be offered. And letters will be sent home to parents encouraging them to take the America Saves pledge. Each participating bank will offer a drawing for a $50 gift card per school to parents who take the pledge.
